The images in this collection are largely from woods and forests local to my home in the Lake District. To me, they occupy a unique place, representing both permanence and transience. The woodlands have been here a long time and have seen more than any of us. Yet they constantly cope with the infinitely variable weather, the impacts of humans and other animals, as well as the changes that climate warming and environmental degradation brings. Through all this, they teem with relentless life, and constantly regenerate. They are an enormous inspiration.

It’s probably fair to say that mountains were my first love! I’ve been a hillwalker, climber and mountaineer for longer than I care to remember, and so I’ve always been drawn to these high places. It is extremely rare now for me to ever venture into the hills without a camera. Even on long mountain days of 8 hours plus, I will have a camera. Sometimes, it never even comes out of the bag (if the weather doesn’t play ball) but having it with me means that when that fleeting moment occurs, I am ready and waiting.
The images here are all from the Lake District. I’ve lived there for the last four years and it’s been life-changing from a photographic point of view. I live within walking distance of the hills, and so can easily get my fix! It’s not uncommon for me to be up on my local summit for sunrise.
Whilst I live in the Lake District, I’ve also been fortunate enough to have travelled a fair bit. There are images here of mountains and high places from Austria, the Faroe Islands, Svalbard, Canada, the USA, as well as locations closer to home in Scotland and Wales.

Living in the UK means there is water everywhere - we are surrounded by oceans. Living in the Lake District means there’s even more water. It rains a lot, and the landscape is characterised by mountains and lakes. These pictures are not limited to the Lake District however. They contain a range of images of lakes, rivers, seas, waterfalls from many parts of the world.

Here you will find a collection of images that are all about ice and snow. In my day job, I am a glaciologist, and so over the years I have been fortunate enough to work in some of the coldest places on earth (including Antarctica, Greenland, Svalbard, Iceland and Arctic Sweden, as well as various parts of the Alps and the Rocky Mountains of Canada). My work is all about understanding the response of glaciers and ice sheets to our warming world, and so whilst I’m carrying out fieldwork, photography generally has to take a back seat. However, I always have a camera with me, and it comes out whenever the opportunity allows.

This album contains images of wildlife. I am primarily a landscape photographer rather than a wildlife photographer, but I have a love of the animals that we share this planet with, and they are a key part of the landscape.
Many of the images you will find here are about telling that story - i.e. the way that animals exist in the landscape. As a result, they are often just a part of the image, rather than the entire focus.
A collection of images of flowers and plants.
Urban environments provide ample opportunity for urban landscape photography and more intimate and targetted scenes. Whilst not my main photographic pursuit, I do enjoy this type of photography, and so here’s a small selection of such images.
